Hacking a DSi or 3DS is the ONLY way to play some of those old gems. If you try to pick up a DSi or 3DS secondhand, it’s almost guaranteed to have been factory reset, erasing any games that were once on the system. For instance, DSiWare can’t be emulated, and many titles have already been pulled from the eshop. But once nintendo drops support for a console and closes up shop, hacking and sourcing roms are about the only way to experience old games. I gave nintendo plenty of $$$ and I always make sure to support the devs of games I like by picking up what they release on current gen consoles. But if you’re decent at doing internet searches and a little forum digging, you'll run across resources. Finding roms is trickier, and I won’t disclose where to get them since bringing attention to these sites is how they get shut down. It’s really easy to find step-by-step guides with a quick google search.
